Why Chinese Medicine Practitioners Are Adopting Topicals Containing the Skin Nourishing Benefits of CBD For After Care

Acupuncture and candles

Chinese medicine has made its way to the West with a widespread acceptance. It goes without saying that the concept of a tui na massage, cupping, Chinese herbs and nutrition, acupuncture, or moxibustion no longer sound strange to American ears. In fact, there are an estimated 27,000 licensed practitioners of acupuncture in the USA alone, many working alongside conventional Western doctors in hospitals.

What Does the Endocannabinoid System Have to do With Chinese Medicine?

Research suggests there is a little known way that Chinese medicine is closely linked to cannabinoids. TCM can access the incredible endocannabinoid system (ECS) via a surprising method: acupuncture.

Acupuncture is a thriving approach, proven to reduce discomfort. Research has shown that adenosine, a neuromodulator that can calm pain (it has anti-nociceptive properties), is liberated during treatment. Other experiments reveal that endocannabinoids control the level of adenosine with the brain. The endocannabinoid system, a novel and key participant in acupuncture’s multiple beneficial effects stated that the “ECS mediates multiple acupuncture’s effects, such as analgesia and neuroprotection.”

The Connection Between Chinese Medicine and the Endocannabinoid system

Our cells are complex and biologically engineered to help us function and heal. They have a lock and key design that can be therapeutically altered by external compounds like medicine.

Acupuncture can access the cannabinoid receptors.

But before we dive into how Chinese Medicine connects to the endocannabinoid system, let’s take a look at what the ECS actually is.

The endocannabinoid system 101

Known as a neuro-modulatory system because it modifies the central nervous system, the ECS is crucial for development and for appropriately responding to internal and external threats. It is also key to neuroplasticity: The brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life.

This system contains cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2), endogenous cannabinoids, enzymes that are able to create or destroy cannabinoids, and cannabinoid antagonists that oppose the actions of this compound.

Each component plays a key role…

Cannabinoid receptors and endogenous cannabinoids

In the traditional doorway, a locked mechanism means a door cannot move and a person cannot enter or exit. In the cell, a locked mechanism means a response cannot take place. The receptors act like a lock, which allows their matching cannabinoids to fit like a key. When this lock and key snap together perfectly, a reaction can take place.

Cannabinoid receptor one (CB1) and two (CB2) are present in different tissues. CB1 can be found throughout the central nervous system (CNS) and in peripheral tissues, while CB2 is expressed in the immune cells and in the skin.

Enzymes

Then there are enzymes. These small compounds act as catalysts. They regulate the rate of a reaction without, themselves, being altered during this process. They step in, lend and hand, and then leave, ready for their next important moment.

Cannabinoid antagonists

Cannabinoid antagonists are like a door jam. They sit in the lock (receptor) and prevent the key (its matching compound) from fitting. This prevents a reaction from taking place.

After Care: How to Support Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment with Temporary Pain Relief Products Blended With Skin Conditioning CBD

While the positive impacts of Chinese Medicine begin in the treatment room, at-home care is important to support this work. CBD CLINIC™’s evidence-based temporary pain relief topicals help to continue the positive effects. The active pharmaceutical ingredients, camphor and menthol, provide a cooling and heating sensation to the skin.

  • Camphor is an essential oil derived from the wood of the camphor tree, a tree native to China and Japan. This natural substance has antiseptic properties as well as analgesic properties. This counterirritant helps alleviate pain by increasing cutaneous blood flow, resulting in cold and hot sensations that interrupt the pain signals in the brain.
  • Similarly, menthol, a natural compound from the mint plant, has been proven to be an effective counterirritant, making it an excellent synergistic partner with camphor as an effective analgesic.

In order to enhance the cooling and heating effects of these powerful analgesic terpenes,  we employ a handful of additional terpenes including clove oil, eucalyptus oil, peppermint oil, frankincense oil, and more. They not only soothe the skin but offer aromatherapy benefits that help the patient feel more balanced and rejuvenated.

All of these essential oils are delivered through natural emollients like jojoba seed oil, CBD hemp oil from the Cannabis sativa L. hemp plant, and cottonseed oil to nourish the skin throughout sustained treatments. Our massage oil uses only the finest ingredients.

Chinese medicine and CBD CLINIC™ Topicals form a powerful temporary pain-relieving duo, without the complications and side effects potentially delivered by pharmaceutical agents. It’s no wonder this combination is such a favorite for TCMs!

Whitney Ciancio / Certified Acupuncturist; Coweta, OK

I was introduced to CBD CLINIC™ just after I graduated and started using it in the office. The feedback from patients was all positive. I now carry level 4 ointment in the office and sell it to my patients for pain relief. This product is a great addition to my acupuncture treatments!

Deborah Rinehart, RN, DOM, AP / Acupuncture physician; Seminole, FL

I have been using the level 5 PRO SPORT™ CBD ointment at the end of my treatments with a little tui na.
I have seen quicker results of decreased pain and increased mobility when used in conjunction with acupuncture. My patients absolutely love this ointment because it gives them such fast relief of tight muscles and painful joints. I have been ordering this from Lhasa and have been very satisfied by the efficacy of this product. I will continue to use this great ointment. I gave a tub of this to my family, friends and neighbors for Christmas. Best gift ever!!
