As a practitioner offering massage services, your patients count on you to provide them with pain-relief as often as they choose to come in. However, oftentimes, their pain will return with a few days, and they’ll have to live with it until their next appointment.
To help them avoid this, consider teaching your patients or clients simple, massage at home techniques they can utilize between sessions.
Teaching massage at home can:
- Attract patients and clients while expanding your bookings
- Retain current patients and clients
- Boost your current income and propel digital product creation
- Build trust between you and your clients
Remember: While at-home massage often eases pain and improves function, it won’t replace your professional massage knowledge, skills and hands. People will still need you!
At-Home Massage Tutorials
Whether you decide to teach self-massage, massage for loved ones, or both; creating home massage tutorials is simple.
Where to start
Consider what you do and the advice you repeatedly give patients. How can you simplify this, remove the professional jargon, and deliver the synopsis in a meaningful, actionable way for beginners?
Ask yourself:
-
- Will your lesson be for self-massage or that of others?
- Which body area will you teach massage for? Someone massaging their neck may remain seated and leave their clothes on. Whereas, someone massaging their legs might need to lie down or remove an item of clothing.
- How can they massage the muscle(s) correctly? Which direction? How much pressure? For how long?
- What massage techniques best suit the target area(s)?
- Will you teach deep tissue massage or how to give a back massage or basic massage techniques?
- What products can aid results? Our massage oil containing aromatherapy botanicals and active analgesics such as menthol and camphor for temporary pain-relief can enhance any massage experience, even those performed at home. Consider carrying topical temporary pain-relievers or massage oils from the CBD CLINIC™ Massage Therapy Series in your practice. Or, sell products online with the CBD CLINIC™ Share Program, which allows you to sell CBD CLINIC™ products to your patients online while receiving 50% of the profits.
Once you have decided on what type(s) of massage you want to teach and the best approach to doing so, write a plan and consider what tools and props you’ll need.
Teaching makes more sense when you show and tell, so using props to explain what you are doing is helpful. If you are giving a partner’s massage tutorial for beginners, engage a volunteer to show what you’re doing.
If you recommend the use of a tennis ball, massage cane, or foot roller, showing exactly how to use these items will also improve success.
Consider Creating a Cyberspace Footprint and Community
There are countless ways to teach people how to massage at home, but we highly suggest creating online video tutorials, either by going live or recording in advance. The internet provides the perfect podium to create tutorials with ample delivery platforms. You can also reach individuals who may not be able to come in for in-person lessons.
Facebook Live. Facebook Live provides the benefit of presenting in real-time. Viewers can ask questions and you can instantly reply. You can also gain immediate feedback on what your students love, what needs they have, and what could be improved. It is also free and simple to host.
Zoom. Zoom is an ideal option for teaching live to smaller groups in real-time. You can see multiple people, watch their expressions, and interact freely.
While Zoom does offer a free version of their application, it only allows calls up to 40 minutes. So, if plan to go longer than this, it might be worth investing in the paid version.
By sharing your knowledge through video, people connect with you in a multi-sensory manner and you will quickly become seen as the go-to expert.
YouTube. While you can live stream on YouTube, this platform is ideal for those who might not be comfortable broadcasting live. This megalithic platform is the second largest search engine so its reach is wide. To enhance your video upload and reach, you can:
- Record your lesson ahead of time, ensuring that your audio and video quality is professional.
- Give your video a clear name.
- Write a compelling description, adding your website and social media details.
Once you are ready to upload, you have three choices when listing your YouTube video(s). You can make your videos:
- Public or searchable by anyone. If you want to build your community, the public setting will enable your massage at home videos to be seen by the masses.
- Private. Only those who are invited and have a YouTube account can view these videos.
- Unlisted. Your videos will not come up in a search, but can be watched with the appropriate link. This setting is perfect if you are choosing to charge for your lessons, allowing you to share only with specific people.
If you find you have had positive feedback on multiple video tutorials, you might choose to create a permanent program hosted on one of the various teaching sites like Teachable, Thinkific or Udemy.
Teach Massage at Home with Printed Materials
A key to successfully teaching beginner’s massage is communicating effectively, but we all learn in various ways. Either on their own or along with video tutorials, consider offering:
- Infographics (images with a few words) to demonstrate the best areas to massage for pain relief. We provide a “Common Pain Points” graphic for you to utilize, free of charge.
- Massage technique cards provide visual examples that students can use to make sure they are performing the massage technique correctly.
- PDF files or handouts with instructions and picture demonstrations of at-home massage techniques. People often benefit from both written instructions as well as visuals, so this is an ideal option, especially for beginners.
Take advantage of our home massage pointers that you can utilize in your materials.
Build your Practice and Reputation
Teaching beginners to effectively massage at home might initially seem counterproductive. But when you teach people how to perform an amazing massage, they will be grateful and connected, increasing the chances that they will share your knowledge and invest money in your services.
Plus, you’ll provide much-needed support and advice, create rapport, build your digital community, and become known as an expert. Giving tutorials also provides the opportunity to transform videos and printable instructions into sellable digital products, which diversifies your income and expands your business.
